You can tie with other players for any of the medals, and the next person(s) below you will receive the next lower medal. Gold medals in healing are useless unless you managed to get gold while playing as roadhog, bastion, soldier, etc while you had a mercy, lucio, zenyatta, or ana on your team. Supports like bap moira mercy can easily outheal the other supports and get a gold medal for it especially in lower ranks.

I honestly feel like people place too much weight on the medals and tend to focus less on working together as a team. Instead of distributing ranked rewards based on merit the way league of legends does (special skin for gold rated and above players), overwatch gives players the option of purchasing a golden weapon skin using a currency called competitive points. It would also encourage people to keep playing their best despite getting steamrolled.

This is even worse if i have gold medals in damage, but no medals in eliminations. Like 10% less for each gold medal, 5% less for each silver and 2.5% less for each bronze. Could be that you are just tapping a lot of targets.

Lucio and zen would be even worse because they can’t get a gold medal in either healing or damage but will need a separate utility meter and this utility meter will have to be adjusted to have a minimum bar to represent if a player is doing well or not. Medals don't mean anything at all. Drastically improve what you are currently doing or change up your approach.
